Wernicke's Encephalopathy: A Rare but Avoidable Neurological Complication Associated with Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplant

Wernicke's encephalopathy is a metabolic disorder caused by thiamine deficiency, and characterized acute mental confusion, ophthalmoplegia ataxia. Its due to nutritional deficiency arising from prolonged illness affecting nutrition of the patient or requiring parenteral for duration, debilitating chronic illnesses like solid organ lymphoid malignancies. It has been commonly seen alcoholics who have poor oral intake. rare neurologic complication in setting hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). So, high index suspicion should be kept HSCT patients as delay early identification may lead permanent disability even mortality.
